Description

The Run-A-Muck lodge is available privately, to family, friends, and trusted ‘friends of friends’ only. Located in Twin Peaks, Ca the lodge adjoins the San Bernardino National Forest - halfway between picturesque Lake Arrowhead Village and the town of Crestline/Lake Gregory- about an 8 -10 minute drive each way.The Lodge is on the 'near side' of the mountain communities, a short 80 to 90 minute drive from most locations in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. This makes the most of even short weekend getaways. With level entry parking for up to 6 cars, and 'no stair' level, front access, entry is easy for all ages. At nearly 6,000 feet elevation it enjoys easy accessibility in all four seasons. Located on an infrequently travelled, but still main road, it is plowed regularly, often while the snow is falling. Even in larger winter storms, you aren’t snowed in.The lodge is almost 3,800 square feet and has six private bedrooms, which sleep a total of 16. The bedrooms are configured as follows:

  • Master Bedroom (ground floor) with King bed and dedicated On-Suite Master bath.

  • Log Cabin Bedroom (ground floor) has a queen bed, solid privacy doors, and an adjoining bathroom that is shared through a separate door with the main cabin.

  • Upstairs, there are four more bedrooms. Three of the bedrooms have queen size beds. The two log cabin bedrooms are separated by a hallway and heavy curtains, plenty of privacy, but not totally soundproof). The third bedroom has a solid door.

  • Also upstairs is the ‘dorm room’ with two bunk style beds, one of which has a lower queen, and there is also a trundle. Total the room sleeps 6 adults in beds….how many under 12 year-olds fit is your decision. Again, it has a solid door.

The four upstairs bedrooms share one full bathroom. An additional ‘sink and mirror’ are located in an alcove for general use.Two additional sleeping locations are available. Two quality fold-away beds are stored in the upstairs alcove and can be set up in the game room. Downstairs the living room sofa folds out queen bed. This brings the total beds in the lodge to 20.A large game room (pool table, ping pong, dart board and 70-inch TV) and well-equipped office space anchor the upstairs public area. The ‘sunset deck’ off the upstairs game room gives great views of its namesake across the tops of nearby trees. Three upstairs air conditioners, while rarely needed in the cooler mountain climate, are in each of the upstairs bedrooms. Last a swamp cooler is available for the main floor. A well-equipped modern kitchen features a large refrigerator / freezer, dishwasher, range and even a wine cooler unit and bread-warming drawer. The very private, large outside rear deck features a Jacuzzi, wood burning outside fireplace with gas lighter, swinging basket chairs, a children’s rock-climbing wall, and a large natural gas supplied bar-b-que (never run out of propane). The front patio with its own “porch swing” is another great place to sit and think while watching birds and squirrels play in the bubbling water fountain.A high chair, booster chair and an ‘almost full size’ portable crib (not counted in the bed total, make it easy to care for the youngest among us, without having to ‘truck’ everything with you up the mountain.Perhaps the greatest feature are the adjoining mountain trails -- waiting just outside the back door. Oaks, firs, pines, spruce, manzanita and more enliven a diverse forest with over 50,000 acres of State and National Forest trails offering tremendous views across the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains. Many trails feature overlooks of Lake Gregory and Lake Silverwood.Relax or play hard…..we hope you enjoy the lodge as much as we do.

History

The Run-A-Muck Lodge combines a log cabin feel with all the modern conveniences. The lodge has been featured in a “palaces of the empire” article in the ‘downhill’ San Bernardino Sun newspaper, and twice has been included on the ‘Best of the Mountain’ homes tour. (See the plaques inside the front door). While we might think ‘palace’ is stretching it a bit, the lodge is visually inviting, warm and entertaining, a perfect place to build memories. The original small ‘log cabin’ was built in 1949-1950 by John and Greg Dexter (brothers) who ran local sawmills. One brother built and lived in our ‘log cabin’, the other a few houses away. One of the sawmill’s foundations can still be found nearby in the forest, about a quarter mile from the cabin. The Dexter brother’s sawmills were an important part of early Lake Arrowhead and Twin Peaks life until shuttering for good in the 1980’s. In addition to our original log cabin, they built many early area structures, including the Antler Inn, a must stop close by on highway 189.The Dexter’s sold their cabins upon closing of the mills. Our cabin came under the ownership of a widow we will call “El” in 2001. El spent 20 years designing and constructing the modern large cabin (3770+ square feet) you now see wrapping around the log cabin. She had a great eye for integrating the ‘original cabin feel’ with a modern structure. This includes leaving the charming original ladder in the log cabin which connects to the second story log cabin bedrooms. Today the ladder is a unique accent, even though the upstairs bedrooms can be accessed via the modern new staircase. Many of the construction materials were sourced locally so the big logs in the main living area (alcove, staircase, and fireplace) closely match the original cabin. Local mountain river rock forms the 25-foot fireplace and a local artist created the bear ‘picnic’ mural that adorns the dining area alcove wall.Grandchildren visited, hence the concern for a few items that kept children both visually engaged (the dorm room wallpaper) and allowed for entertainment / exercise (e.g. the outdoor kids climbing wall).El also ‘reclaimed’ several items from the abandoned sawmill for her re-models. This gives the place a Dexter’s Sawmill ambiance. In addition to the original direction sign in the carport, the downstairs entertainment center and game room shelf system were custom made from reclaimed Sawmill wood. Even a section of the sawmill’s siding, (with Dexter’s Sawmill, Twin Peaks, still visible in red), has made its way to become part of the exterior deck roofing. Last, a door from one of the original sawmill trucks, found half buried in the woods, and showing the marks of a little target practice fun, has become part of the game room décor. The result is truly a unique place…ready for both fun and relaxation. We welcome you to make your memories-- adding to all the treasures you will find in this fascinating lodge.
